Which sun protection should I use for high-altitude sports ?

Which sun protection should I use for high-altitude sports ?

Anyone who practise high-mountain sports must be aware that they are operating in a risky environement. While the risks linked to the activity itself, the dangers or the element, such as the sun, are plural but hard to understand. We shed a light on the topic (pun intended…).

Ever since 1950, when we first produce the Vermont Classic that we were talking about on social media, we have been on board with many great expedition around the globe. The French military (GMHM) group of high mountain intervention was for instance in Peru to conquer some virgin face !

THE DANGERS OF THE SUN IN THE HIGH MOUNTAINS ENVIRONMENTS

The intensity of solar radiation is 1.5 times greater at 2500m and 2.5 times greater at 4000m than sea level radiation. You are therefore much more exposed and the bigger amount of UVB contained in the radiation are particularly dangerous.  The omnipresent snow in high altitude reflects 80 to 90% of solar radiation whereas on non-snowy ground only 20% of these bad boys reverberate.

Even in covered conditions the sun is a badass ! The radiation goes through the clouds. For instance when it’s foggy only 50% of UV are stopped. If you are in the middle of a cloud in high altitude the light diffraction blinds you.

THE MOST COMMON DISORDERS

  • Photokeratitis ou snow blindness, caused by the erosion of the layer of surface cells of your cornea.
  • Erythropsia, which is an exhaustion of the retina after a prolonged exposure to intense light simulation.
  • « White out » syndrome, forsbite of the eye or eyelids  as a result of being too long in extremely cold conditions.
  • Corneal forsbite, as said. It was cause irreversible damage leading to blindness if not taken care in time!

Those pathologies lights up (pun intended, again !) two mean function compulsory for sun glasses in high-mountains. The glasses must stop the UV and the frame must cover your eyes from cold.
