Ski goggles for kids: how to choose?
In the mountains, the safety of your child's eyes is paramount. More fragile than those of adults, they can quickly suffer damage from the harmful effects of the sun.
To protect your little adventurer, opt for comfortable and high-performance gear: the ski mask. Which model should you choose for your child? Here are the criteria to consider.
A SKI MASK IN THE RIGHT SIZE
Ski masks for children are not one-size-fits-all. To fit all faces, they are generally offered in age ranges. Even if it seems logical, pay attention to the comfort of the mask. To ski with peace of mind, your child must feel comfortable in their gear!
At the time of fitting, make sure that his mask:
- does not pinch the bridge of his nose;
- does not exert pressure on the eyes, temples, cheeks, and forehead.
To protect his eyes well, the ski mask must be airtight and perfectly fit the shape of his face. Unlike sunglasses, it creates a barrier against wind, cold, and prevents tiny residues from infiltrating. No more watery or stinging eyes!
Caution: as your child grows, he will probably need to change to a larger size ski mask. Do not overlook this step.
A SKI MASK WITH SUFFICIENT SUN PROTECTION
Unlike adults, children's eyes do not have natural protection against the sun. With the reflection of the rays on the snow, it is even more important to choose good sun protection. Without it, their retina - which is still developing - may be damaged.
The recommended minimum index? Category 3, which filters out virtually all UV rays and allows for comfortable skiing in sunny weather. Faced with glaring light, it improves your little one's visual comfort and effectively protects them.
Another option: opt for a photochromic ski mask. This evolving screen lightens or darkens with each change in brightness. In good and bad weather alike, it ensures excellent vision. Your child will be more comfortable on the slopes!
A SKI MASK ANTI-FOG
For comfortable skiing, most ski masks are now treated against fogging. Some masks are even designed with a double lens. The advantage: creating a layer of air between the two panes to isolate the inside of the mask and prevent condensation.
For optimal visibility, the mask should ideally have:
- a double lens;
- additional anti-fog treatment on the inner surface of the lens;
- good ventilation that promotes air circulation and prevents fogging.
Good to know: to remove dust from your mask, avoid using gloves that can scratch it. If the lens is dirty, clean it gently with a soft, non-abrasive cloth like a microfiber wipe.
A ski mask must be perfectly compatible with your child's helmet. When trying it on, make sure the strap can go around the helmet. With complete and comfortable equipment, your young skier will be able to discover the joys of winter sports in complete serenity.
Does your child wear prescription glasses? Look for a ski mask labeled "OTG" (Over The Glasses). Like our Proton OTG model, this type of mask has an OTG foam that allows you to slide your glasses into the ski mask without feeling any discomfort!
