For David Göttler, mountaineering is far more than just a sport:

“Mountain climbing to me is far more than a hobby. It’s my life, my passion – something that is always present.” On the highest and most dangerous mountains in the world, he deliberately seeks the uncompromising path – without supplementary oxygen and without external support. This style is considered the purest form of alpinism and at the same time the most risky.

And yet, this is exactly where he finds its true essence. “I love the elements: ice, wind and snow,” he says, describing his motivation to repeatedly expose himself to extreme conditions. The direct confrontation with nature and the conscious engagement with every situation form the core of his mountaineering philosophy.

As a certified mountain and ski guide (IFMGA), David lives between Northern Spain, Munich and Chamonix. With more than 30 major expeditions worldwide, he is among the most experienced high-altitude mountaineers of his generation, with the Himalayas holding a special place in his heart.

In summer 2025, he achieved a long-standing dream: climbing Nanga Parbat – without supplementary oxygen and without Sherpa support. His subsequent paraglider flight back down to basecamp marked a world-first and gained international recognition.

This expedition adds to an impressive list of achievements: with successful ascents of Gasherbrum II, Broad Peak, Dhaulagiri, Lhotse, Makalu and Everest, David has already summited six additional 8000-meter peaks in this uncompromising style.

For him, it is about far more than just reaching the summit. “In fully concentrating on every single move and being aware of the consequences, I discover a new challenge every time,” he explains. For David, embracing this interplay of risk and responsibility ultimately means one thing above all: “being alive.”

With his progressive approach, he aims to redefine the limits of modern alpinism and actively contribute to shaping its future.
