Renewing your prescription glasses:
5 things to know

Reimbursement conditions, prescription validity period, changing lenses at the optician…

To help you see more clearly, we explain everything!

1. REIMBURSEMENT: WHEN CAN I RENEW MY GLASSES?

The reimbursement of your prescription glasses is possible:

  • Every 2 years for adults (16 and over);
  • Every year for children aged 6 to 16;
  • Every 6 months for children under 6.

This reimbursement is provided by Health Insurance and, where applicable, by your supplementary health insurance. The only condition: present a valid prescription to your optician. This document issued by your ophthalmologist is valid for:

  • 5 years for adults aged 16 to 42;
  • 3 years for adults over 42;
  • 1 year for children under 16.

2. CAN I RENEW MY GLASSES BEFORE TWO YEARS?

For adults, early renewal of glasses (frame and lenses) is only possible if your vision changes. The coverage period is then reduced to one year if there is a variation of 0.5 for one lens or 0.25 for both lenses. If you are not affected, you can still purchase another useful item between the two reimbursement years, such as prescription sunglasses.

Children under 16 can renew their equipment as often as needed if their prescription changes.

Finally, there is no renewal limit in case of visual impairment due to specific medical situations (glaucoma, severe eye trauma, corneal transplant, cataract surgery…).

3. CAN I CHANGE MY GLASSES DIRECTLY AT THE OPTICIAN’S?

The ophthalmologist is a specialist of the eye: only they can issue a medical prescription for a first visual correction and detect any diseases. However, this professional often has long wait times and is difficult to access. That’s why, since 2007, it has been possible to renew your glasses at the optician’s.

The conditions? Be over 16 and have a valid initial prescription. This service allows you to obtain more suitable corrective lenses (not progressive). In case of changes to your vision, the optician must inform your original prescriber.

Unless your ophthalmologist states otherwise, optician-led renewal is allowed for many disorders: myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia or presbyopia. It’s a fast and effective solution to renew your glasses without delay, especially in case of loss or breakage!

4. CAN I RENEW MY GLASSES WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION?

Without a medical prescription, an optician is not allowed to provide prescription glasses. However, they can sell non-corrective equipment such as comfort glasses, sunglasses (without correction), or accessories and care products.

5. WHY SHOULD I RENEW MY PRESCRIPTION GLASSES?

Our vision changes over time. For better visual comfort, it is essential to have a check-up every 2 to 3 years. In case of rapid vision deterioration and/or ongoing monitoring for certain conditions, an annual check-up is necessary. This ensures you have appropriate lenses and glasses for everyday life!
