Eyeglass wearer: the solutions

Everything you need to know about prescription sports sunglasses

The wraparound shape and curved lenses are two characteristics of sports glasses but also their main constraints for fitting corrective lenses. However, your vision should neither prevent you from playing sports nor put you at a disadvantage compared to others. Various solutions exist through your optician and especially through new digital surfacing techniques that allow you to customize your sunglasses to your vision. Discover our solutions.

When you visit your optician, here are the different options available to you:

  • Keep your prescription glasses, but they do not protect from the sun and are not suitable for sports (fragility, poor fit...).
  • Classic prescription sunglasses with a low base curve (max 6): this solution is simple but has the disadvantage of limiting the field of vision.
  • Optical clip-ons: once again, this is a simple solution but it has many disadvantages: reduced field of vision, spartan comfort, limited optical quality, formation of fog…
  • Contact lenses: they offer a very good alternative, but not everyone can tolerate them and many activities make them particularly uncomfortable: dust, sweat, dry eyes...

BUT WHAT ABOUT PRESCRIPTION SPORTS SUNGLASSES?

The wraparound shape and curved lenses are two characteristics of a sports frame but also its main constraints for fitting corrective lenses. Indeed, this frame shape requires a large lens surface which increases the risk of blurring on the periphery of the vision. They involve a significant base curve (angle between the two lenses): 8 for a sports frame compared to 4.5 for a standard frame, and this results in the optical axis being off-center. To correct this issue, at Julbo, we have developed variable thickness lenses within our own RX laboratory. Our prescription lenses (RX Trem) thus offer the widest possible field of vision without distortion in any direction of gaze; about 20% more angle of view. Learn all about them.

IS THE UV PROTECTION OF PRESCRIPTION SUNGLASS LENSES COMPROMISED DURING THEIR MANUFACTURE?

No, our plano (non-prescription) and prescription lenses are made from the same blanks and therefore meet the same standards and protection against the most harmful UV rays of the sun. Digital surfacing does not affect the properties of the glass.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE TREATMENTS FOR PRESCRIPTION SUNGLASS LENSES?

  • Photochromic treatment: the lens darkens or lightens depending on the light intensity.
  • Polarizing treatment: eliminates glare from the sun on reflective surfaces (snow, water, etc.).
  • Anti-reflective treatment: improves optical comfort and eliminates stray reflections.
  • Oleophobic treatment: prevents fingerprints or grease marks and makes cleaning easier.
  • Hydrophobic treatment: facilitates the sliding of water on the lens, improving visibility.

IS IT DIFFICULT TO ADAPT TO PRESCRIPTION SUNGLASSES?

With prescription glasses from our RX Trem program, adaptation is immediate. The integration of a compensating prism in the surfacing and the wide field of vision provided by the design of our lenses allow for almost immediate adaptation for wearers. However, if you have a problem adapting (except for prescription errors), we fully cover the return of your prescription sunglasses within a 3-month limit.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO WEAR PROGRESSIVE LENSES IN SPORTS SUNGLASSES?

Yes, through our RX Trem program for prescription sunglasses, we offer progressive lenses for active use. Indeed, the surfacing technology of our prescription lenses prioritizes dynamic vision. It ensures perfect far and intermediate vision for any wearer on the move and near vision to easily read maps, smartphones, or watches.

WITH MY PRESCRIPTION, WHAT KIND OF PRESCRIPTION SUNGLASSES CAN I GET?

You can now find out which sunglasses can be customized to your prescription using our RX LAB Selector by directly entering the corrections from your prescription, or consult our selection of sports sunglasses adaptable to your prescription. Nevertheless, an exchange with your Julbo optician retailer is essential to confirm this.

THE MOST IMPORTANT POINTS TO CLARIFY ARE:

  • Prescription strength
  • Intensity of use and type of sport

These initial details will allow the optician to select the appropriate lenses and frames available with your prescription. After making comfort and morphological adjustments, the optician must take 4 measurements (instead of the usual 2) to ensure high-quality lenses: pupillary distance, lens height, lens-to-eye distance, and pantoscopic angle.

Once your prescription sunglasses are ordered by your optician, you will receive them within 7 business days, and your myopia, astigmatism, or presbyopia will no longer be a handicap during your sports activities!
