Which sunglasses for which sport?
In sports practice, good vision is essential for a good reading of the terrain.
More than 70% of our movements are guided by our sight
In sports, good vision is essential for accurately reading the terrain. Over 70% of our movements are guided by our sight. Thus, sports sunglasses are much more than just a fashion accessory; they are truly a performance aid. The two essential elements to consider when choosing your sports sunglasses are the frame and the lenses: two inseparable elements for a perfect combination. Before making a purchase, it's important to define its use: for which sport? How often?
Which location (high mountains, desert, beach...)? What budget? Here's a brief overview of the differences that exist.
THE FRAME
There are versatile frames as well as frames specially developed to meet the demands of a specific sport. It's up to you to define its use and, most importantly, to ensure that they fit well on your nose and do not cause any discomfort; comfort and support are two essential criteria.
High mountains: skiing, hiking, trekking, mountaineering
High mountains are an extreme environment that can quickly become hostile. Good equipment is essential, especially for your vision. Therefore, we strongly recommend choosing the most wraparound frame possible, with shields to block lateral sunlight, wind, cold, or snow... It is also important to choose straight temples, so they can easily fit under a helmet, hat, cap, or adjustable temples for optimal fit.
ENDURANCE SPORTS: CYCLING, MOUNTAIN BIKING, TRAIL RUNNING, CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING, TRIATHLON
First and foremost, opt for a lightweight frame so you can forget about it during your long rides. We also recommend choosing slim or adjustable temples to easily slide your frame under your helmet or cap. Additionally, opt for anti-slip temple tips and an adjustable nose piece to ensure maximum grip despite speed and rugged terrain. Ventilation of your frame is also an important criterion to consider to prevent fogging.
WATERSPORTS: SAILING, KITESURFING, STAND UP PADDLE (SUP)
We recommend a flexible and wraparound frame to prevent water splashes, but with good ventilation to prevent fogging: suspended or perforated lenses. There are also floating sunglasses, an interesting feature for all watersports where you can easily reach out to retrieve your glasses if needed.
SUNGLASS LENSES
To find your winning combination, your sensitivity to the sun and the sunlight conditions of the location (desert, high mountains, beach, etc.) are important questions to consider. And it's the material, protection category, color, and treatments of your sunglass lenses that will make the difference. At Julbo, beyond the technicality of the frame, it's the lens that makes the difference in price, and we always strive to offer you both solutions: polycarbonate lenses or REACTIV photochromic lenses.
HIGH MOUNTAINS: SKIING, HIKING, TREKKING, MOUNTAINEERING
The higher the altitude, the more harmful the sun's rays become, so it's crucial to have good sun protection in high mountains. We offer the widest range of lenses dedicated to mountain and high-mountain activities. Within our range of lenses, we offer REACTIV photochromic lenses that adapt to the brightness throughout the day, SPECTRON polycarbonate lenses (fixed tint), and Alti Arc mineral lenses (fixed tint). In high mountains, it's not just about being protected from the sun, but also from wind, cold, and snow with rapidly changing weather. The advantage of a photochromic lens, which darkens or lightens depending on the ambient light, is to provide optimal eye protection regardless of sunlight conditions. We recommend, for high mountains, the REACTIV lenses:
- REACTIV 2-4 Polarized: photochromic and polarizing lens from category 2 to 4 (visible light transmission rate 20-5%). In addition to darkening and lightening according to ambient light, it eliminates reflections on reflective surfaces. Its brown color provides excellent perception of the snow surface and improves contrasts.
- REACTIV 2-4: photochromic lens from category 2 to 4 (35-7%). Its brown-yellow vision color increases brightness and provides excellent depth perception. It is lighter, brighter, and activates faster than the REACTIV 2-4 Polarized.
ENDURANCE SPORTS: CYCLING, MOUNTAIN BIKING, TRAIL RUNNING, CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING, TRIATHLON
These sports are practiced on varied terrains, from plains to undergrowth, so we highly recommend a photochromic lens that adapts to these changes in light conditions, without the need to change or remove your glasses. At Julbo, different protection ranges exist, so it's up to you to choose according to your usage:
- Sunny or nighttime: REACTIV 0-3 (visible light transmission rate 12 to 87%)
- Sunny to overcast or from dawn to dusk: REACTIV 1-3 High Contrast category 1 to 3 (13 to 72%), well adapted for winter conditions, or REACTIV 1-3 Light Amplifier category 1 to 3 (17 to 75%)
- Strong sunlight to cloudy weather: REACTIV 2-4 category 2 to 4 (7 to 35%)
You can also opt for a category 3 polycarbonate lens, highly versatile in its usage (SPECTRON 3).
WATERSPORTS: SAILING, KITESURFING, STAND UP PADDLE (SUP)
At the water's edge or on the water, we strongly recommend choosing polarized lenses. They eliminate sun glare on reflective surfaces, providing a clear vision of the horizon without any annoying reflections and allowing you to distinguish gusts. The polarizing treatment may affect reading on screens.
Once again, photochromic lenses offer undeniable visual comfort regardless of the weather: from strong sunlight to cloudy conditions. Therefore, we recommend the REACTIV 2-3 Polarized lens (32 to 9%), which is also polarized and specially developed for all watersports.
For reasons of budget or versatility, our Spectron 3 Polarized lenses in polycarbonate are also a very good option.
