David Gaudu joins the Julbo team

Leader of the Groupama FDJ team for the upcoming Tour de France, David Gaudu joins the Julbo family. An interview with a champion for whom vision is more than ever a key factor in performance.

"For the first time in my career, I am riding with prescription glasses made for me"

Hello David, first of all, welcome to Julbo. Can you explain the reasons that led you to choose Julbo?

"I've been a professional since 2017, and I practice a sport that is subject to all kinds of weather conditions, even the worst ones. Sometimes we can be out in the rain for several hours. And even though I wear glasses in everyday life, I had never had prescription glasses for racing. That was really a problem. I tried quite a few brands, but I was never really convinced. This is the first time I've tried cycling glasses with my prescription that I actually liked. So, I didn't really hesitate."

Glasses are an essential part of a cyclist's equipment, and we can imagine that's even more true for a rider like you...

"During our discussions, Julbo was very responsive in providing solutions and offered me glasses that really suited me. They have great experience in high-level sports and outdoor activities, so I was quickly convinced."

Tell us about the model you used during the last French Championships.

"I was able to ride for the first time with the Ultimate REACTIV sunglasses adapted to my prescription. These are the glasses that suit me best. They offer a very wide field of vision, and I noticed the difference at the end of the race when the conditions got worse (thanks to the photochromic lenses)."

Sometimes we talk about marginal gains—do you consider vision to be one of them?

"Yes, absolutely. Sometimes we're on the bike for more than six hours, and with the right glasses, you save energy—I’m convinced of that. It’s a comfort for your head, your vision, and the central periphery of your upper body. Every percentage of fatigue saved is an extra percentage you can put into the bike. And every detail counts. I can't wait to start the Tour de France with Julbo."

Who is David Gaudu?

At 24 years old, David Gaudu is one of the best riders in the world peloton. Winner of the Tour de l’Avenir in 2016, considered the Tour de France for under-23s, he broke through in the 2019 season by winning a stage at the Tour de Romandie, a key event on the international calendar. Last year, after abandoning the Tour de France, he made a triumphant comeback at the Vuelta a España: winning two stages and finishing 8th overall. The native Breton excels on steep gradients. His victory in April on a stage of the highly competitive Tour of the Basque Country perfectly illustrates his new stature. After being one of the key riders for the Groupama FDJ team last year at the Giro d’Italia (4 stage wins for his leader), the 23-year-old from Savoie continues to make his mark among the professionals. And this year, still on Italian roads, he came close to victory once again.
